On the way to work this morning, I spotted something strange on the Rideau River. My naturally morbid mind began wondering it I was seeing a body, or a lump of disgusting garbage, or something else nasty. As I continued by, the nasty brownish misshapen lump resolved itself into a pair of Canada geese shepherding a line of bright yellow goslings between them.

I have resolved to take this as a sign that I should try harder to look for the positive surprises and beautiful things in life.

In my first year in Ottawa I cycled to NRCan from my apt, and I loved loved loved seeing the geese and swans and their young on the canal.

We live close to a canal now, and I see lots of ducks, and some coots; some swans, but not as many as in Ottawa, or in Reading either.

The only redeeming feature of the job in Reading was the walk to work along the Thames to see the wildlife.

A good resolution, to look for the positive. And while I agree it's nice to see the new, young life thriving at this time of year and Canada Geese are lovely looking birds, they are also hugely destructive, especially of tender newly-planted crops. I was interested to see this story about a novel, non-destructive way of mitigating CG-caused crop damage. We always knew Border Collies were great sheep herding dogs. Who knew they could be so effective at goose control? :)

Wildlife this week has been a big rabbit, a tom turkey, and lots of geese. I think I saw three turkey vultures circling near work, certainly big bird with soaring habits.
